This forecast works at the level that actually matters: the individual beach. We track 12 of them, from Key West up to Daytona and across to Clearwater, and run a separate 7-day projection for each, because their realities diverge wildly — the Keys can be knee-deep in seaweed while Clearwater stays spotless. The model ingests fresh Copernicus satellite imagery daily, locates the mats drifting offshore, and projects what reaches which sand and when. How our forecast works
Satellites detect floating sargassum through the AFAI spectral index — mats reflect near-infrared light in a way open water does not. We pull this imagery from Copernicus and NOAA four times a day, then project each detected mat forward along wind and current vectors; in Florida, the Gulf Stream does most of the steering. Beached seaweed decays on an exponential curve with a 3.5-day half-life unless new material lands. Each beach gets a daily score from clean to avoid, corrected by community reports when clouds block the view. Days 1–3 carry the most confidence, and the whole forecast recomputes daily.
